I ran Lenovo's Hard Drive Quick Test yesterday, and it failed, so I confirmed what the issue was. I ordered a new hard drive which should arrive Monday (upgraded from a 160GB 5400 rpm to 320GB 7200 rpm).
I know how to make images of and swap hard drives, so the problem will be soon be solved.
