Droughts are a natural part of our system and prior to the erection of locks at the mouth of the Murray River to keep sea water out the lakes at the mouth of the Murray ebbed and flowed between salt and fresh water; the sea came in when the Murray ceased to flow and the lakes were flushed out when drougt broke and the Murray flooded. The comments about fear of acidification are quite correct, but only if the lakes are allowed to go dry. The solution is to remove the locks and let the sea water in, ruinous for the farmers who irrigate out of the lakes since the locks were installed, but otherwise completely sensible!

It seems that the problems the world faces now is ...

It seems that the problems the world faces now is almost to big, there´s a word for it "malthusian catastrophe". That's PER DAY!

Is it any wonder the world is festering in problems that involve resources and the environment.

Of course there are regulating, officious types that say we need laws, carbon credits, etc. to stem the tide. If they have their way then soon enough one will have to file an environmental impact report and pay a tax just to go to the bathroom.

Now let's say government around the world took steps to curtail population growth (not necessarily draconian... perhaps simpler thing such as discontinuing tax breaks for more than two children, etc.

Sadly, it would take decades before there would be even a hint of noticeable change. And yet, this sort of thing should of begun 30 years ago. But then, it would be political suicide for a politician to be against motherhood and babies.

Strap yourself in folks, what's coming now is comeuppance for our inability to act.
